Preparations for Moving

When you plan on having a change of address, there is a list of things that you need to get done. Moving is already a very stressful thing to do, the last thing you need is to forget to clean up some loose ends.

In order to make this move happen as smoothly as possible, go through all of these items and make sure that you do each one before you move, or shortly after.

Utilities/Bills

In order to make sure that you are not paying for a service that you are no longer using, make sure that you have all of your utilities and billing services shut off. It is best to call two weeks in advance so that they can schedule to shut them off. Nothing is worse than having a bill arrive at your new home for several months worth of unpaid utilities and other bills!

Department of Motor Vehicles

In order for you to have a valid driver’s license, you need to contact the DMV with your change of address. This ensures that if you get a ticket appeal court date or a fee it can be sent to the correct address. While you may not want to receive these items it will be a lot better than not getting them at all and getting in trouble with the law.

While you are at it, you need to contact your insurance company if you didn’t already do it in the bill step.

Bank

It is important for your bank to know about your new address so that they do not accidentally send your personal financial information to the wrong house! It only takes a few minutes for them to put in the correct information and send you on your way.

School

If you have kids, it is important that you not only contact the school that your child is currently attending, but to contact the new school as well. This will make sure that the transfer process runs smoothly and your child can start school as soon as possible after the move.

Doctor/Dentist

If you will be switching hospitals or dental offices after your move, you should contact these places to make sure that your records are transferred. It is important for your new clinics to have this information so that they can know what you have had done, what you are allergic to, and all sorts of other pieces of information.

Subscriptions

If you are subscribed to any magazines or other products, you do not want the new home owners to receive what you are paying for! Contact them and inform the companies about your change of address and move date. You want to do this before you move so that something isn’t sent out in the mail before you tell them, but is set to arrive after you move.

Conclusion

These are some of the basic places that you should contact before and shortly after moving. While it may differ from person to person, there are a multitude of other locations that you may need to contact. Make a list, it will truly help!
